Porlex Hand Mill
We had been looking around for a great travel grinder for a long time, and we're stoked to finally have found these Porlex hand grinders. For travelling they're perfect - the hand crank comes off easily and the body is made from stainless steel so it can take a beating.
The ceramic burrs will stay sharper longer than steel burrs, and stay cooler when you grind a lot of coffee. The grind size is adjustable from inside the ground coffee compartment, and ranges from very coarse french press, all the way through to turkish.
As with most small grinders, the bottom burr set is not fixed to the top set, and as such, there's some play at coarser grind settings. At coarser settings this will produce a much larger range of particle size, which isn't perfectly ideal for french press or pour over. But we think it's a small compromise, and the benefits of a compact and sturdy portable grinder outweigh the negatives.
